Dressing Up The Work Wardrobe With Skirts

Consisting of the “work horses” of your closet (pants, blazers and the like), the work wardrobe can get a little boring. How can you breathe a little life into your work attire while still being comfortable during the summer heat? Add some beautiful and classic skirts!

I love myself a fun skirt. With my long, slender frame, I love reaching for midi skirts as they further extend my height while adding a ton of femininity to a work look. Another favourite cut and wardrobe classic? The pencil skirt, which is both classic and sexy at the same time.

When looking at my own collection of skirts, I thought it would be helpful to share a list of skirt styles that are the most work appropriate. And my apologies to one of my favourite skirt styles out there, Ms. Miniskirt, but unless you are working in a really creative field, a miniskirt may not fly in all professional environments.

Alright – let’s talk skirts!

Pencil

The pencil skirt is an extremely flattering piece that transfers beautifully from office to happy hour. With its form-fitting shape and hem, the skirt challenges its wearer to walk with grace and studied poise and looks fabulous paired with almost anything from tank tops and sweaters to blouses and suit jackets.

Pleated

Pleated skirts also have their place in the office. To maintain the crisp lines of the fabric, store your pleated skirts carefully by hanging them using clips on pant hangers and use a reputable dry cleaner to preserve those pleats! Thanks to the pleated skirt’s wealth of fabric, they have a movement that is nothing short of graceful while being both work appropriate and elegant.

Straight

While fitted at the waist and hips like the pencil skirt, the straight skirt offers a slightly more comfortable fit. Its versatility is the same as the pencil skirt but may be a better option for those not looking for such a form fitting look.

A-line

Another type of skirt that transfers well from day to night is the universally flattering A-line skirt. Fitted at the waist and flaring out at the hem, this skirt flatters most body types by accentuating the waist and minimizing the hips and bum.  A-line skirts and dresses work well at any type of event and offer the work wardrobe a fun and youthful look.

Flared

A variation of the A-line, the flared skirt shares the same shape but with an added flare that adds more movement (think swishy, swingy fabulousness as you walk). Flared skirts fit right into an office environment with their conservative hem length. Opt for one in a fun fabric that will look great equally in a boardroom or on a sunny patio.

Circle

When laid out flat, the circle skirt forms a giant circle hence its very appropriate name. Another versatile piece, this skirt gives a very feminine appearance and is usually worn on casual to semi-dressy occasions. Remember ladies, these skirts love the wind, so be mindful on windy days to keep the hemline due south…or flash away… whatever floats your boat!

What is your favourite skirt look? Let me know in the comments! I’m extremely partial to the flared midi skirt, myself!

  1. Gurl, you haven’t seen my closet… I think I’ve counted, no joke, over 50 skirts!!! I have skirts of all kinds and this post is inspiring me to dig into my closet and start wearing them again! I switched to pants in the last few years, because it helps me keep my weight off. It sounds funny, but having more restriction, reminds you that you are full! It’s no excuse… I should go back to what I love!

    1. Hey Chantal! I’ve totally been embracing skirts too. I’m a “pants person” for sure, but I find that there are way too many awesome skirts and dresses out there right now! My sister lost a lot of weight a few years ago and she says the same thing about skirts – but, you gotta live a little! xoxoxo
